HMS Albion Aground

Geoffrey Miller (gmiller6@bigpond.net.au), aided by Andrew Bamji's computer wizardry, has provided a digital version of this watercolour, showing the pre-dreadnought HMS Albion being towed-off of ANZAC beach. The owner of the original is Mr Chris Dawson of Cammeray, Sydney NSW Australia, and we are grateful to him for allowing it to be reproduced here.

The artist was a 37 year old New Zealander who was serving as an Australian sergeant at Gallipoli; his name was Gilbert Patrick Hoskins and he was evacuated after shrapnel wounds to his buttock in October 1915. Prewar he was a 'Theatrical manager'. He joined up on 21st August 1914 in Australia.
